MITHILA — Congregation-facing Mass has resumed at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Kochi. The resumption of this mode of worship at the basilica comes following sustained demands from within the local church community regarding the format of services.
A sizeable share of priests and laity members belonging to the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese had been actively demanding the congregation-facing Mass. At the same time, this group of priests and members of the laity has remained opposed to the Unified Mass.
The Unified Mass is the liturgical mode that the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church had been insisting on. Despite the insistence from the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church on the Unified Mass, the demands from the priests and laity of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese preceded the return of the congregation-facing Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica.
