MITHILA — Emergency search and rescue operations are continuing across mud-filled valleys and tunnels three days after catastrophic flooding devastated Nepal's Bhote Koshi-Trishuli region. The death toll from the disaster in Nepal has reached 675, while 2,426 people remain unaccounted for. Across the border at Gyirong port, Chinese authorities have confirmed seven deaths and reported that 554 people are missing following the cross-border deluge.
Large-scale rescue efforts have successfully assisted more than 4,400 people so far. Among those evacuated are 108 Indian nationals, four of whom were located and rescued from inside a hydropower tunnel. The official count of Indian citizens unaccounted for in Nepal has now been revised down to 287. In response to the crisis, India has dispatched emergency relief and is coordinating efforts to safely bring back citizens stranded on the Chinese side.
